The Customer Zone
Your dealership, and your product are already in, what I refer to as, the "customer zone". Your customer is literally sold before you meet them. In most cases your customer has already made some big decisions before they ever shake your hand. Consider these facts;
1. 85% of all customer's today, make the decision to purchase before they leave their home
2. 100% of those customer's have selected their choice of product, beginning with their first choice, (they may have selected as many as three to choose from), and
3. 72% of those customer's have chosen the location they shop first based on product and dealership location (convenience).
Using this data it would only make sense that the average closing ratio should fall somewhere between 70 - 85%. So why doesn't it?
For the most part, the staff at most dealerships are taught to sell the product, not solve the underlying issue(s). We have to become problem solvers
first, and salespeople second. The customer is already sold on your product and your location. You need to solve their problem and they will be sold on you. Our primary mission should be to discover "WHY" the customer is making a switch or deciding to make an addition to their automotive stable. Once you understand "why" the customer is in front of you it is extremely simple to resolve their concern(s).
You Begin by Gathering the Correct Data
Regardless of the instrument, your guest sheet needs to record invaluable data. Your form is basically useless if you're not getting the "right" information.
Stop thinking of your customers' present vehicle as a trade, and start viewing their vehicle as a replacement! Ask yourself; "Why" is the customer replacing a perfectly good running vehicle? Is their vehicle outdated? Is it out of warranty? Is it not in keeping with their lifestyle? Is it too big, or too small? Are problems beginning to surface? Is the technology lacking?
Your primary interview should uncover as much as possible about the vehicle the customer is replacing. You need to know "why" it is being replaced, before you should even consider suggesting a replacement.
